Who knew Pipe Dreams would be so active in the art community? Well, this weekend, they got the community on lock with not one, but two art shows at their two retail spots.
The first show is this Saturday night, from 5-9pm, at their Pearlridge location. The second show is the next afternoon, from 3-7pm, at their Ala Moana location. Both shows will feature art from Pinky Taylor, Daves Action, Steve Looney from Pacific Soul and The Starfish Guy. BTW, if you’ve checked out Starfish Guy’s blog recently, you’d know that he’s getting a custom Labbit prepared for the show. I probably don’t have to tell you it’s gonna be pretty ill, but I’ll save the surprise for the show.
The Starfish Guy is making moves, one crazy starfish arm at a time.
After successfully conquering his last solo show “Chocolate Love,” TSG returns to the scene with a new show, featuring work past and present at Pipe Dreams Surf Co., as well as displaying work from …Lost artist Pinky Taylor. Of course, this is not to be confused with another shop called Pipe Dreams. If you’re confused, then you’re two days late.
Anyway, besides displaying artwork, TSG has just collaborated with Alpine Indy for three new all-over print ladies tees. This promises to be just the beginning for the TSG x Alpine Indy collabos, so keep your eyes peeled for new stuff from that venture.
The show will travel between the two Pipe Dreams locations on the island. The first stop is this Friday at PearlRidge Downtown from 3-8pm. For the two heads, the show moves to the Pipe Dreams at Ala Moana on Saturday from 12-5pm. So, catch one or both of the shows and support local art.
Big ups to James aka TSG for the past couple of months he’s had. He’s been a part of the last groundUP show of 2008 and also he’s fresh off of putting up his work in his very own solo show, Chocolate Love.
Now, he’s bringing all that love to YOU, the consumer, with a whole new line of The Starfish Guy items. Ranging from plush starfish (definitely a big hit with everyone that’s seen them) to the wooden starfish magnets and the one-of-a-kind spraycans. Everything you see here is custom built to the exact specifications of The Starfish Guy.
You can snag any of this fresh new stuff over at The Starfish Guy website or swing by and check out his Chocolate Love show at Prototype in Pearlridge Center, which is still up.
Brand new at Prototype is a new line of The Starfish Guy magnets. Cute, wooden, and painted, these will make an awesome edition to your refrigerator, countertop, death laser, or other metallic apparatus.
Each one is made a little different, so no two stars look exactly the same.
You can catch these stars for $7 each at Prototype.
Homie to the site and all around nice guy The Starfish Guy has dropped his latest series of customized cans at Prototype. The last series of cans went hella quick, so TSG went back and made 15 more cans for your enjoyment.
These cans are individually marked and individually made, so no one can looks like the other. These are actual spray cans, as one quick shake will reveal that these have been put through its paces by some of Hawaii’s dopest artists. TSG’s characters adorn the can and the design wraps around the entire can, so feel free to display this outside of the box, so you can bask in all angles of the can.
As an added bonus, a few of the cans are linked to special bonus prizes. You could win one of two magnetic stars or, the grand prize, a customized canvas. After purchasing the can, your friendly Prototype Operative will check to see if you’ve won. I tried to get TSG to tell me which ones are the winning cans, but he wouldn’t, so you’re gonna have to take your chances with it. I mean, the cans are dope by themselves, and, for $15, you really can’t go wrong with it as artwork.
It’s just that a few of them could score you something extra.
This is IT, you guys. The final Beat Root (for now) goes down this Friday night, the 29th (leap year!) . Four of the past winners (Opposite, Ques?, Lael’s Beats and Sentr1c) will be vying for the Grand Championship title with two of the most consistent competitors in the Beat Root series (S.T.U. and Humdrummin). The title of Hawaii’s best beatmaker is on the line and thes guys will be giving it their all at rRed Elephant.
BUT! That’s not the only thing going down this Friday night. Oh no, because the lightsleepers have packed this night to the gills with an amazing array of performers.
Look for performances by Hawaii’s own and the Bay Area’s finest Joe Dub and the bulk of Canada’s hip hop scene with Factor, Kay the Aquanaut, Forgetfull Jones, Def3 and Kirby Dominant coming along side the ride. Also performing are some of Hawaii’s illest, Rhyme Da Old Man will be throwing down, as well as Grip H and Juan P aka the Perfect Median and Showdown in Chinatown winners from the Hidden Habitats, Timer1 and DJ Bumblebee.
On top of ALL THAT, there’s also going to be art installations by The Starfish Guy, KOAK, Shaun Castro, Stanstill, Nicolai and a whole bunch more.
PLUS! There’s also gonna be a blackbook battle based on the word “Primo,” sponosred by Art Primo.
I don’t know how they’ll be able to get everything in before 1am, but I’m hoping they do. This is gonna be the greatest night in Hawaii Hip-Hop history. No doubt in my mind.
Props to in4mation, XPRMNT, Prolifik, Skull Candy, Easy Music Center, Art Primo and Vitamin Water for making this all possible.
