atypicalLIVING x HELLAguapo presents: What The Fruitcake?

Yep, this is what I’ve been working on for the past couple of months.

HELLAguapo, in association with atypicalLIVING, presents a holiday art show of interesting proportions. “What The Fruitcake?” showcases brand new talent and doubles as a donation point for those in need. Featuring artwork from Shaun Castro, Remi Mead, Philippe Anthony, and Cheryl Lyn Membrere, and featuring pieces from newcomers Desiree Agngarayngay, Daniel Headland, Dainzers, and Kiyo Keanini. The What The Fruitcake? show is destined to be a launching point for Hawaii’s newest artistic prodigies.

Alongside of the amazing artwork will be a couple surfboards on display from HELLAguapo team member Icedcoffeeman. DJs J-m3ll0w and enJAY will be holding down musical duties and GoodGuyJames will be hosting the event.

This free event is also being used as a collection of goods for the Lokahi Giving Project. Feel free to bring an unused toy or gifts to be donated to the Lokahi Project this Holiday season.

This all goes down this Saturday night at Starbucks Ewa Beach (91-1401 Fort Weaver Road). The show begins at 6pm and keeps going until 1130pm.

Take a break from studying or celebrate not having to study anymore at this event. Should be a fun tome for all involved.

    Prolifik Spring 2010 Look Book

This is the latest designs from the McCully street phenoms, Prolifik.  It’s been a minute since we heard from them, but it was definitely worth the wait.  Along with opening up their design studio/printing area/retail spot to the public, they’ve been making moves, sponsoring Team HMC fighters Van Shiroma, Sadhu Bott, and DeJuan Hathaway (all of which will be fighting March 20th at X-1 World Events CHAMPIONS 2 at the Blaisdell, more info coming soon).

Along with that, they’ve been doing collaboration pieces with top artists, such as Eukarezt, Pancho Abalos, Shaun Castro, Philippe Anthony and KOAK.  They’ve also teamed up with fellow clothing companies Artist Proof and Poksai as an oficial distributor of the brands.

    (video by Philippe Anthony)

This Spring LookBook represents what’s next, but definitely not what’s ahead for Prolifik.  The brand and it’s creative minds are always cooking something up. If you only knew what was about to hit…

All these designs will be available starting this Saturday at the Art Wars event at Diverse Art Center.

Check out Prolifik on their website at http://www.prolifikprojects.com or become a fan on their Facebook.

    Outlet Night presents PISTAS

    FINAL_Outlet_side

FUSE, the Young Adults outreach ministry of New Hope, will be hosting a special edition of their Wednesday night Outlet Night outreaches. This is a bit different from your usual cake and puch church gatherings, as there’s actual dope live art going on, awesome live music, and FREE food. Good food, on top of that too.

Called PISTAS: faith through the eyes of art, the art will be provided by some of Hawaii’s top artists, including Shaun Castro and Philippe Anthony. Live music will be pumping all night and, of course, the good vibes of positive people will be permeating throughout.

This all goes down TONIGHT at the Campus Center Ballroom at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The doors open at 6:30pm and there’s free parking on University Ave. after 6pm. Come down for the good vibes, great food, great live art and awesome people.

New Poketo Wallets from CkaweekS, Newkon, & Shaun Castro

This Thursday at Prototype, three of Hawaii’s finest will display their latest project: wallets.

Newkon, CkaweekS, and Shaun Castro will be on hand for the unveiling of their very own wallets from Poketo.  These wallets feature designs from the artists themselves, and will be available for purchase at the event.  Think of it as dope art that you can carry around… with some functionality thrown in, for good measure.

And, since this is a Prototype art event, you best believe there’s a blackbook battle going on somewhere in the building.  Especially since Lofa will definitely be back from his Comic Con adventure.

There’s no indication how many of each wallet they will be getting in, but rest assured that if you want one, you best be in the building opening night.

The event goes down this Thursday night at Prototype in Pearlridge.  Show starts at 5pm and keeps going until 8pm.

For more info, check out Prototype Ops online.

    atypicalLIVING covers… The Love Movement

This edition of atypicalLIVING covers… what could be Shaun Castro’s final art show in Hawaii. Shaun’s been homies with the atypicalLIVING crew since day zero, so we were more than happy to swing by and show the Love at the Love Movement. I’ve personally seen Shaun grow both as a person and an artist for darn near 4 years now. This show felt like the culmination of those years of growth. From the beginning sketches to the BFA show to all the groundUP events… and now, these wonderful masterpieces that will push the envelope for Hawaii art and Hawaii artists for the next season.

The gauntlet has been thrown, who’s willing to bring it?

Big ups to Shaun for throwing some dope pieces up there, including the ill Jesus Piece. Also, big ups to the Prototype Operatives for providing a dope spot and a chill atmosphere to hold such events.

Check out the rest of the Love Movement flicks at the atypicalFLICKR.

Also, check out some more flicks taken by RZone on the RZone Blog.

All the paintings are for sale, check them out at Prototype is any of them interests you. Also, the shirt that Shaun is rocking is for sale. You can pick up the Shaun Castro x Prototype collabo shirt from Prototype.

Shaun Castro Feature Article in the Honolulu Weekly

Props to Shaun Castro for getting himself a feature in this week’s Honolulu Weekly.  In the article, he discusses his art, his inspirations and the controversy that surrounds it all.  The article also serves and a reminder that Shaun’s solo art show is this Saturday night at Prototype.

Click on the photo above to read the whole thing, because the Honolulu Weekly web crew is slacking big time.

Again, Shaun Castro’s solo art show, The Love Movement, goes down this Saturday night from 5pm to 9pm at Prototype in Pearlridge.  Check it out before heading off to Jake the Snake’s Next Movement at Next Door.  It’s a night full of Movements, make sure you make one… out the door to the events.

The Love Movement featuring the work of Shaun Castro

This Saturday marks the first ever solo art show for Shaun Castro. The lightsleeper/groundUP pirate/Prolifik designer will be bringing his unique blend of classical and urban styles to the walls of Prototype this Saturday night. The show will also be the launch of a special edition wallet Shaun did with Poketo. Look for the wallet at the show and bring some cash, as this wallet will go quickly.

Shaun’s art showcases his combined experiences of being a conflicted youth, a redeemed by faith Christian, and an artist that is revered by many around the world. Be there to see the combination of all three in one spot.

The Love Movement starts 5pm this Saturday night at Prototype and will continue until May 26th. Consider this a primer to the Next Movement later on in the evening.

Shaun has been down with atypicalLIVING since day zero, so I’m personally stoked to see Shaun getting some shine on a solo level.

Trip The Lights: Beat Root GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP

    20080218-ttl1copyrc6.jpg

This is IT, you guys.  The final Beat Root (for now) goes down this Friday night, the 29th (leap year!) .  Four of the past winners (Opposite, Ques?, Lael’s Beats and Sentr1c) will be vying for the Grand Championship title with two of the most consistent competitors in the Beat Root series (S.T.U. and Humdrummin).  The title of Hawaii’s best beatmaker is on the line and thes guys will be giving it their all at rRed Elephant.

BUT!  That’s not the only thing going down this Friday night.  Oh no, because the lightsleepers have packed this night to the gills with an amazing array of performers.

    20080218-ttl2copykh0.jpg

Look for performances by Hawaii’s own and the Bay Area’s finest Joe Dub and the bulk of Canada’s hip hop scene with Factor, Kay the Aquanaut, Forgetfull Jones, Def3 and Kirby Dominant coming along side the ride.  Also performing are some of Hawaii’s illest, Rhyme Da Old Man will be throwing down, as well as Grip H and Juan P aka the Perfect Median and Showdown in Chinatown winners from the Hidden Habitats, Timer1 and DJ Bumblebee.

On top of ALL THAT, there’s also going to be art installations by The Starfish Guy, KOAK, Shaun Castro, Stanstill, Nicolai and a whole bunch more.

PLUS!  There’s also gonna be a blackbook battle based on the word “Primo,” sponosred by Art Primo.

I don’t know how they’ll be able to get everything in before 1am, but I’m hoping they do.  This is gonna be the greatest night in Hawaii Hip-Hop history.  No doubt in my mind.

Props to in4mation, XPRMNT, Prolifik, Skull Candy, Easy Music Center, Art Primo and Vitamin Water for making this all possible.

For more information, check out the lightsleepers website.
