NEW! Perfect Median x The “This Morning” EP

Even though they may be leaving the island, they’re not going down quietly.

knowjuander and Grip-H have just dropped a new 5-track EP full of dope music to keep your head nodding long into the last weeks of Summer.

This EP is broken down into two sides. Side A is “older” stuff; older in quotations because they haven’t been recording beats for too long. Side B is newer stuff and it includes a 9th Wonder track as the EPs finale.

Best of all, the EP is free. Can’t beat that.

Check out the new release at the Cosmic Souls Collective site.

    Perfect Median farewell show

Yes, the headline is correct. After blessing Hawaii with almost 5 years of amazing performances and vibe creating music, Grip-H and know:juander will be performing for the last time in the state of Hawaii.

But, this is not a sad farewell, as they will be going out with a bang this Friday night at a very special edition of Hip-Hop at the Trops. Along with PM, there will be performances by The Audible Lab Rats, Rhyme The Old Man and Pro (of Pro n Product). DJs Cozy, Un, Revise, and Careless1 will be holding down the rest of the musical duties.

The show is this Friday at Tropics Cafe. 18+ and no cover.

    For more info, call 808-372-2301

On a side note, we here at atypicalLIVING have been advocates for The Perfect Median since we met these two dudes at the first genuineHI “On the 1” event. They’ve been supporters since the (near) beginning and we will continue to support both Grip-H and know:juander in their future endeavors outside Hawaii. They blessed Hawaii with amazing performances and held their own night after night, performance after performance.

If you’ve never gotten a chance to check these guys out live, I highly suggest hitting up Tropics Cafe this Friday night. After the performance, you’ll understand how big of a loss this is for the Hawaii musical community. Big UPS to the Perfect Median and big UPS to DJ Bone for throwing these positive events for the scene.

Hip-Hop at the Trops: Valentine’s edition.

The Siq Records crew and DJ BONE got something dope for you guys this Pre-Valentine’s Night.

What better way to celebrate your Valentine’s (or lack thereof) than with Creed Chameleon?  Seriously, Creedence should be bringing it EXTRA HARD this Friday, as this holiday makes up the majority of his first studio album “Love Potion Cyanide.”  Speaking of, if you somehow manage your significant other to go with you to Tropics this Friday, you get a free copy of “Love Potion Cyanide” as a special gift to you two.

Besides the good Valentine’s vibes, you also get the musical stylings of the Hammer Brothers and the consummate professionalism and ill emceeing of Hawaii’s next Kings of Hip-Hop: the Perfect Median.  Also, for the first time , Ill Hill Society will be gracing the stage.  So, that should be enough of a treat for you guys to come out.

Top that off with extra grooves of DJ Kozy and CareLess1.

This all goes down this Friday night at 9:30pm at Tropics Cafe at the Ward Farmers Market.  Tropics Cafe is located next to the Ward Theatres and the Ward Farmers Market.  Entry is free for those 18+, so enjoy the good grooves, good vibes, and awesome food.

For more info, check out SIQ Records.

atypicalLIVING Covers… The (last) Next Movement

This edition of atypicalLIVING Covers… takes a look at the final Next Movement at Next Door.

For the past year, Jake “The Snake” Miyasato has been turning the downtown filmhouse into the mecca for Chinatown hipsters to get their monthly fix of fashion, music, and art.  This event, which sprang forth from Jake’s earlier efforts on the UH-Manoa campus, quickly became the destination for Hawaii’s social elite to see and be seen.  And, we’re sad to see it go.  But, it didn’t go down with a whimper.

The genuineHI crew cranked back and unleashed the magic one last time on the hipsters and socialites alike.  The room began to shake with the sounds of DJ Mr. Nick and DJ Fame.  Then the roof got blown off by the sonic fury of the combined forces of the Perfect Median and DJ Bumblebee.  Then the walls got blown off by the unmistakable flow of EMIRC, with DJ Jimmy Taco kicking down the door.  Finally, the combined efforts of The Street Society and a collective of UH and HCC students brought the house down.

This was definitely an epic event and one that will be missed.  Congrats and GOOD LUCK to Jake as he embarks on his career with Boeing.  Hopefully, he can link up with atypicalLIVING’s Northwest crew and continue to make the Next Movement happen up there.  I know it was said earlier in the event post, but we feel like we’re watching our brother move up and out, since both atypicalLIVING and genuineHI both got started up around the same time.  We’ll miss the homie Jake, but know that… he’ll be back.

Check out all the flicks from the Next Movement (all 230 of them), right here on the atypicalFLICKR.

Trip The Lights: Beat Root GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP

This is IT, you guys.  The final Beat Root (for now) goes down this Friday night, the 29th (leap year!) .  Four of the past winners (Opposite, Ques?, Lael’s Beats and Sentr1c) will be vying for the Grand Championship title with two of the most consistent competitors in the Beat Root series (S.T.U. and Humdrummin).  The title of Hawaii’s best beatmaker is on the line and thes guys will be giving it their all at rRed Elephant.

BUT!  That’s not the only thing going down this Friday night.  Oh no, because the lightsleepers have packed this night to the gills with an amazing array of performers.

Look for performances by Hawaii’s own and the Bay Area’s finest Joe Dub and the bulk of Canada’s hip hop scene with Factor, Kay the Aquanaut, Forgetfull Jones, Def3 and Kirby Dominant coming along side the ride.  Also performing are some of Hawaii’s illest, Rhyme Da Old Man will be throwing down, as well as Grip H and Juan P aka the Perfect Median and Showdown in Chinatown winners from the Hidden Habitats, Timer1 and DJ Bumblebee.

On top of ALL THAT, there’s also going to be art installations by The Starfish Guy, KOAK, Shaun Castro, Stanstill, Nicolai and a whole bunch more.

PLUS!  There’s also gonna be a blackbook battle based on the word “Primo,” sponosred by Art Primo.

I don’t know how they’ll be able to get everything in before 1am, but I’m hoping they do.  This is gonna be the greatest night in Hawaii Hip-Hop history.  No doubt in my mind.

Props to in4mation, XPRMNT, Prolifik, Skull Candy, Easy Music Center, Art Primo and Vitamin Water for making this all possible.

For more information, check out the lightsleepers website.
