Kero One / Dirty Scientifix / Ohmega Watts in Seattle

    3347445939_ef42c3fc76_o

Oh SNAP! Jake the Snake is back at it again.

This time, the genuineHI fam is making moves in the Upper Left, bringing up Bay Area favorite Kero One, along with Dirty Scientifix and Ohmega Watts to the Nectar Lounge.

Kero One killed it the last time he was in Hawaii, so there’s no doubt that the heat from the show would warm up a pretty cold Pacific Northwest.

Seattle heads, go check this show out, it’s definitely gonna be talked about tomorrow.  Doors open at 9pm, for the 21+ crowd & tickets are $10 at the door, $8 for advance.

You can scoop up your tix here.

For more info, check out genuineHI. Big ups to Jake and for all he’s doing to bring positivity to the Northwest, Hawaii, and beyond.

    Just when you thought…

So, I’m checking my email the other day when I run across this message saying to check out genuineHI.com

At first, I thought this was some sick joke.  Jake is in Seattle getting his engineer on and has been way too busy to rock out on some promotions steez.

But, lo and behold, the site is BACK and better than ever.

Now, besides the promotions aspect, Jake is taking to event reporting in the Upper Left, announcing albums and shows for the greater Seattle area.

genuineHI and atypicalLIVING has always been online brothers in a sense: we started up around the same time, blew up around the same time, and went into totally different directions at the same time (Jake moving to Seattle and me coordinating/curating art shows).

But, I’m personally glad to see the return of a long lost brother to the fold.  And the VERY intriguing “we’re planning events in Seattle and Hawaii” line in the EVENTS section is just whetting the appetite to see what Jake the Snake got up his sleeves.

Welcome back, brother, we’ve missed you on the scene.

Blue Scholars at Next Door this Saturday

Jake and the genuineHI have one last surprise for the people of Hawaii: an epic final show at Next Door featuring Seattle’s finest, Blue Scholars.

They’ve been all over the place recently, riding the wave of success that followed the release of their “Bayani” album.  Geologic and Sabzi have been on the grind, oepning up shows for the likes of the GZA, Hieroglyphics and Q-Tip.

This past December, they held down the Pacific Northwest’s first local hip-hop showcase called “The Program.”  They headlined all five nights at Seattle’s Neumo’s and proved to the world that Seattle hip-hop was on the come up.

Now, to bridge Jake’s present to his future, the Kings of Seattle hip-hop will be in the building in Hawaii to bring the crown prince of Hawaii’s nightlife scene to the Pacific Northwest and Seattle.  But, this shouldn’t be mourned as the final event for genuineHI (for now).  This should be looked at as probably one of the doper shows you’ll experience this Summer.

Also on the bill will be The Soul Pacific, DJ Bumblebee and Kavet the Catalyst.  So, this will be a great time to get that quality time with Jake before the big move in mid-July.

The event goes down this Saturday night at Next Door, starting at 9pm.  21+ are welcome, so keep the kids at home.  Tickets are $20 presale and can be acquired via genuineHI.com or in person at exclusive.

To get you hyped for the show, check out this clip of Blue Scholars performing “Sagaba” at Bumbershoot 2006, opening for Kanye West.

See you guys Saturday at Next Door.

atypicalLIVING Covers… The (last) Next Movement

This edition of atypicalLIVING Covers… takes a look at the final Next Movement at Next Door.

For the past year, Jake “The Snake” Miyasato has been turning the downtown filmhouse into the mecca for Chinatown hipsters to get their monthly fix of fashion, music, and art.  This event, which sprang forth from Jake’s earlier efforts on the UH-Manoa campus, quickly became the destination for Hawaii’s social elite to see and be seen.  And, we’re sad to see it go.  But, it didn’t go down with a whimper.

The genuineHI crew cranked back and unleashed the magic one last time on the hipsters and socialites alike.  The room began to shake with the sounds of DJ Mr. Nick and DJ Fame.  Then the roof got blown off by the sonic fury of the combined forces of the Perfect Median and DJ Bumblebee.  Then the walls got blown off by the unmistakable flow of EMIRC, with DJ Jimmy Taco kicking down the door.  Finally, the combined efforts of The Street Society and a collective of UH and HCC students brought the house down.

This was definitely an epic event and one that will be missed.  Congrats and GOOD LUCK to Jake as he embarks on his career with Boeing.  Hopefully, he can link up with atypicalLIVING’s Northwest crew and continue to make the Next Movement happen up there.  I know it was said earlier in the event post, but we feel like we’re watching our brother move up and out, since both atypicalLIVING and genuineHI both got started up around the same time.  We’ll miss the homie Jake, but know that… he’ll be back.

Check out all the flicks from the Next Movement (all 230 of them), right here on the atypicalFLICKR.

    The (last) Next Movement

This is it.  Jake the Snake is retiring at the top of his game.

The Final Edition of the Next movement goes down this Saturday night.  For the past couple of years, Jake has always brought in an eclectic mix of music, art and fashion into the Chinatown nightlife scene.  And the Next Movement has gotten acclaim from media, both print and blog.

And now, it’s coming to an end.  But, before sounding the death knell, Jake the Snake will send out one final salvo as a thank you to everyone that has stepped into the Next Movement.  And what a final strike it will be.

The musical guests will span the present and future of Hawaii hip-hop.  Headlining the event is the present mogul of Hawaii hip-hop, Tassho Pearce aka EMIRC.  Besides being one of the dopest MCs in the state, Tassho is also the creative force behind the Flip The Bird clothing line and has done collaborations with Evidence from Dilated Peoples, DJ Q-Bert, and Run Athletics for the highly publicized FTB x RA collaboration shoe.

Opening for EMIRC is the Future of Hawaii hip-hop, the Perfect Median.  Juan P and Grip H will be bringing their melodic soul samples, razor sharp wit, showmanship and style to an eagerly anticipating audience.  They’ll be accompanied by the infamous DJ Bumblebee.  They already killed the Next Movement once before, and have been on a tear since, releasing leaked track after leaked track, getting Hawaii prepped for the future.  And the future is looking bright.

Speaking of the future, the fashion portion of the Next Movement will feature the future: students from the HCC Fashion Department and UH Manoa’s APDM Department will be displaying their work on the Next Movement catwalk.  Also on display will be the fashion of The Street Society.

The art for this month will be handled by Hawaii nightlife’s most visible photographer, Honozooloo.  What does he have in store for the Next Movement?  Swing by the show and find out.

As always, DJ Mr. Nick and DJ Fame will be holding it down.

The Final Next Movement takes flight this Saturday night at Next Door.  Doors open at 9pm. $5 presale tickets are available via genuineHI.com, otherwise, it’s $10 at the door.

On a personal note, the atypicalLIVING crew wishes Jake the best of luck on his new endeavors in Seattle.  Congrats on the new job and we got peoples in Seattle to link you up with, so you won’t be without a scene for too long.  It’s sad to see people leave Hawaii, but it’s awesome to see them move up in the world.  Jake/genuineHI started about the same time as we did here at atypicalLIVING, so it feels like we’re losing a sibling in a sense.  But, we know that the positive lifestyle that Jake promoted will continue to live on in the scene thanks to the efforts of genuineHI.

It’s not a eulogy, but a celebration.  So, swing by Next Door this Saturday nights and live the positive lifestyle one last time with the genuineHI crew.  atypicalLIVING will definitely be in the building for this one, so you better be there as well.

DJ Kero One at thirtyninehotel this Thursday

You know, Jake just doesn’t seem to stop. You’d think he’d take a break from throwing shows after another successful Next Movement this past Saturday night…

… but no, the man behind genuineHI is back at it again. This week, he’s bringing down San Fran’s finest, DJ Kero One. You might remember that I actually used the Kero One remix of “The Light” for the atypicalLIVING “Santa Ripped Me Off” Christmas giveaway. So, meet the man behind the beats this Thursday night at thirtyninehotel.

DJ Mr. Nick will be throwing down his fabulous bossa nova beats to get you all warm and ready for the sonic explosion of Kero One. It’s first Thursday, so you know that the Poetry Slam is gonna go off… but after that, where to go? Why not make the 5 minute trek to 39 and get your dance on.

This event is 21+, so bring that ID and make sure you don’t fake it. $10 at the door got you covered for a night of silky smooth sounds and danceable jams. Doors open at 9PM, so get there early and claim your spot on the dancefloor, it’s going to get filled pretty quickly.

For more info, definitely check out genuineHI.com

Jake the Snake and the genuineHI crew brings you the dopest Saturday monthly on the island, mixing together a delicious concoction of art, music, and fashion to the masses of Hawaii.

This month’s edition is no different, as it brings together the music of Hunger Pains and combines it with the fashion of The Butik, SewCEREAL, and Hiromi Tsuchiya. The live art entree will be provided by Fern. The musical appetizer is provided by the one and only Cookiehead Jenkins and the irrepressible DJ Mr. Nick.

As always, the Next Movement gets served piping hot on the final Saturday of the month at Next Door (43 Hotel St.). Doors open at 9pm and keeps it going until 2am. Tickets are $5 presale and $10 at the door. The party is 21+, so if you can’t get down with Michael Jackson or order a Samuel Jackson, I suggest you stay home for this one.

Props to JPS Dressers and Paul Mitchell Focus Salon for providing the hair and makeup service this month.

    tnm_mar_front_low.gif

Jake the Snake and the genuineHI massive is back with yet another edition of the Next Movement.  This one looks to be bangers, as the lineup is definitely fresh to deaf.

First up on the decks is the ever elusive DJ Liger from the lightsleepers/IMON/ECMassive/Turntable Jobbers/Kings of Yag/whatever other crews he seems to be rocking at the moment.  If you were there at OnThe1, you can only imagine the jams Liger got up his sleeve for this special two-hour extended set.  Be prepared to dance dance the night away, as Liger will definitely take you there and back.

Next up is Jonah the Whale, fresh from his stirring album release performance at Lotus Soundbar.  He’ll be performing cuts form his latest “Friend or Foe” along with Creed Chameleon and the rest of the Siq Records Crew.

The art for this month will be blessed with the ever progressive talents of the King of all Kings, Kid KOAK.  He’ll be doing it live and direct for the people, repping the groundUP/lightsleepers ohana.

Last, but definitely not least is the fashion show.  This month, the talents of 100% and “Bite” by Manovich will be on display, showcasing the latest from their highly dope lines.  The boutique for this month is exclusive, Hawaii’s dopest strictly female urban streetwear boutique.

All this, as always, goes down this Saturday night at Next Door (43 Hotel St.).  Online pre-sale tickets are $5, $10 at the door.  Check out genuineHI for more details and to purchase your pre-sale tickets.
