DJ Kool Herc LIVE at Next Door

Celebrate the first TRUE First Friday of 2010 tonight in Chinatown.  January didn’t count, as New Year’s Day was a Friday, so it was more of a New Year’s party.

BUT, this Friday is highlighted by a performance from one of the Godfathers of Hip-Hop, Kool Herc.  He’ll be at Next Door spinning the dopest hits tat you may or may not remember, along with putting down a lesson on how the originators got down with hip-hop.

If this show matches the buzz that came out of his first show on Wednesday, everyone will be in for a treat.

This goes down tonight in Cinatown at Next Door (43 Hotel St.).  Get there early to make sure you get a good spot.

Dirty Laundry: the art of the stain in modern t-shirt design

Besides the usual fun and frolic that accompanies First Friday, there isn’t much to write home about.  Sure, the art exhibits are dope and the venues are always doing something interesting (for example, the Loft and the sushi bar + dance party after 9pm).

The art exhibits, while dope in their own right… kinda overpower the night just because there’s so many of them.  I mena, how do you expect to cover and logically check out all the dope exhibits in a short 3 hours period?  Especially having to navigate through the human traffic that is Chinatown on First Friday?

Well, here’s one exhibit that you HAVE to mark down and check out, only because of the sheer uniqueness of the whole thing.  Dirty Laundry is an exhibit curated by Seeing Red and it focuses on the t-shirts and stains.

Normally, once you drop some ketchup or mustard on that American Apparel, it’s pretyt much cooked.  But, what Dirty Laundry seeks to explain is that you can make the stain work for you.  Each artist in the show was given six “pre-stained” shirts and designed on the shirt around the stain, thus making the stain an integral part of the shirt’s pattern.

This show is sponsored nationally by Cotton, Inc. and 10% of all gallery proceeds go to the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii.

Dirty Laundry opens this First Friday at the Nuuanu Gallery at Mark’s Garage and runs until Sept. 20th.

For more information, check out the Dirty Laundry website.

lightsleepers x angry woebots x APB skateboard deck release commercial

I’d have to say that the title above the video is about the longest thing I’ve ever had to type out on this site. And I’m including the 2006 Holiday Guide in that mix as well.

Anyway, if you didn’t know by now… the lightsleepers, angry woebots and Chinatown’s official skateshop, apb, have collaborated on one of the illest decks to hit the streets in a long time.

To hype up the release even more, the folks at Gift Pictures covered woes pinting up the outer windows of apb a few nights ago. Even the build up to the deck release if dope.

For those that forgot, the lightsleepers x woes skate deck is dropping this Friday at apb. Starting at 5pm, woes will be on hand, signing and numbering the limited edition decks. This one looks to sell out quick, so be sure to get there early to get yours.

For more info, check out the lightsleepers, angry woebots, or apb.
