    The Luckiest Day – Chinatown

The Chinatown Arts District will be celebrating the luckiest day in the entire millenium.  The number 8 in Chinese culture has always represented a number of luck, so today/tonight will represent that.  The Triple 8 Street Festival will feature live entertainment from the Cherry Blossom Cabaret, Na Hoku nominees Doolin Rakes, and Saloon Pilots.  There will also be eight lion dances going on at 8pm.

Also, Hotel Street will be the center of everything, as the street will be shut down and a gigantic 16 ft. by 20 ft. Screen will be erected to show the opening ceremonies of the 29th Olympiad from Beijing.

Come check out this event before hitting up the massive Get Down in Chinatown event later on in the night.  The Triple 8 Street Festival begins at 6pm at the Chinatown Gateway Park.  The event is free and open to the public, so check it out.

    atypicalLIVING covers… groundUP: The Blueprint

This edition of atypicalLIVING covers… the latest, and possibly most massive, effort to date of the groundUP Pirates continued takeover of the Chinatown art scene. Subtitled The Blueprint, the Pirates stayed true to their formula of offering Hawaii’s most diverse mix of art, fashion, music and all around good vibes. The centerpiece of the event was the massive, multiple artist mural, featuring the collective talents of the groundUP Pirates, and featuring special guest pieces from angry woebots, 2H, CkaweekS, and Newkon.

La Pistil provided the fashion, and numerous artists provided the music, including a breathtaking performance by Juan P of Perfect Median, Stutterin Stan (who is well-spoken on the mic), MamaLux, Detego (who I dare say had the performance of the evening), Hope Mayo, and an all out audio assault from DJ Liger, DJ Memoir(s), and DJ Kutz.

Click below the break for more flicks from the show.

    groundUP Pirates present “Invisible Giants”

    groundUP Pirates present

Just when you thought that was it for the year…

…the groundUP Pirates crew comes back for another dope art show.

The usual suspects are back for one last go-round for 2007. The amazing collection of audio, visual, and fashion is back, as well as the live mural. But, that’s where the similarities end. The Invisible Giants will feature the first team mural battle. Three teams full of Hawaii’ best will be battling it out for supremacy and bragging rights as the best team.

To list down the entire teams would just not be doing justice to how dope this battle will be. Just check the flyer for the teams and be prepared for an amazing mural to come out from all three teams.

Also, the amazing amount of people performing and doing displays would also be too much for words. Just know that this is the art event to hit up. I honestly don’t you could get much better than this lineup.

Invisible Giants goes down this Saturday night at the Chinatown Courtyard at 1116 Smith Street. Doors open at 7PM and rocks until midnight. $7 gets you in the door, $5 if you got a groundUP shirt, a collar or a skirt on.

For more info, check out the groundUP myspace.
