    Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day, which would explain why you got to sleep in and/or might be headed to a barbecue at the beach or park.  But, do you know WHY we celebrate this holiday?

Memorial Day is a national holiday traditionally observed on the last Monday in May.  It is used to celebrate those who have fought in the US Armed Forces and died during combat.  Memorial Day was first observed in 1865 as a way to celebrate those who fought in the Civil War.  By then, the remains of Union soldiers from the war were found in no less than 73 cemeteries throughout the nation; most of them found in Arlington National Cemetery and the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

Memorial Day officially became the last Monday in May after the Uniformed Holidays Bill was passed in 1968, moving three federal holidays to specified Mondays to create convenient three-day weekends: Washington’s birthday (now known as Presidents’ Day), Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

So, as you head off to enjoy some sun, burgers, and the relaxation of knowing that there’s little traffic going on today… take time to say “Thanks!” to a Veteran.  They deserve it.

NEW! Fitted Hawaii Onipa’a x Yankees x Kamehameha

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This Saturday’s Fitted Hawaii release coincides with the Memorial Day holiday that’s coming up on Monday.

The set of three items ready for release pays tribute to America and Hawaii by taking symbolic elements of both cultures and incorporating them into dope pieces to rock.

First up is the shirt, which features a re-imagining of the Onipa’a design from a while back.  This one now features a grey tee with a Hawaiian flag made up of black and gray tones on the back.  The front chest of the shirt features the Kamehameha logo surrounded by FITTED HAWAII and ALOHA SERVED DAILY.

The first hat pays tribute to the Yankees.  Love them or hate them, they are THE iconic Major League Baseball franchise.  The hat is done up is traditional Yankee Blue with a white logo and red button.

The second hat pays tribute to the Kamehameha, THE iconic design for Fitted Hawaii. This combines the colors of the American flag with a blue crown, red bill, white button and logo, green underbill and tonal blue New Era symbol and Fitted crest.

All three of these pieces drop this Saturday at the Kona St. headquarters.  The Kamehameha is limited to 30 pieces, so get it while you can.

    Clockwork Prom

You remember prom night, right?  That horrible night 10 years ago.  You were HELLA nervous, not paying attention to your date, spilled punch on her sleeve and went home… alone.

Well, the time has come to make amends to that.  The Vertical Junkies are throwing the “Clockwork Prom” an event where you can (finally) make things right.  Come decked out in your favorite prom era steez, whether it be Back to the Future, Sixteen Candles, She’s All That, or even Prom Night (but I don’t know of anyone who actually SAW Prom Night…)

Anyway, come dressed to impress and dance to the music of DJ Durtie Rice, Jonah the Whale and Rise Up.

This all goes down this Saturday night at Next Door (43 N. Hotel St.).  It’s $10 for couples and $7 for those going stag and looking for a date there.  Both Prom Bids come with a framed prom pic, just like the old days.

You can scoop up tickets to this one at in4mation (Ward and Pearlridge) and Sindication (Windward Mall).

Grind Time Hawaii at the Trops

Hip Hop at the Trops presents a very special event, as Grind Time – the internet’s hottest emcee battle, makes it’s was to Hawaii.  The Main Event for this battle features Hawaii’s own OSNA taking on Dirtbag Dan.  This should be a great event and a battle of epic proportions.

Also on the fight card is the urban legend OBESE JESUS taking on Jordan Dupant and many more battles to be expected.  The sign ups will start early, so look for Hawaii’s top battle emcees to come out for this one.  Dirtbag Dan, Everybody Knows, and the Prolific Unknowns will be holding down the rest of the performance duties.

As always with the dope events at Tropics Cafe, there’s always good vibes, great food, and no cover charge.  This all goes down this Friday night at 10pm at Tropics Cafe, in the Ward Farmers Market.  18+ are invited to have fun at this event.

For more info, check out the Got Rice? Show blog.
