    TAP Project week

TAP Project kicks off again this week.  The TAP Project initiative is a part of UNICEF’s goal to provide clean, drinkable water to those less fortunate.

How this works is that as a patron at participating restaurants, you would donate a $1 or more for the water that you would receive gratis.  This money will go to the TAP Water fund and help build wells for those who don’t have ready access to clean water.

Participating restaurants in Hawaii include all Big City Diner locations, Duke’s Waikiki, JJ Dolan’s, thirtyninehotel, The Wedding Cafe, Tiki’s Bar and Grill, and may more locations.

This initiative runs from today through March 28th.

To find out more about the TAP Project and the full listing of locations that are participating in this, check out http://tapprojecthawaii.com/index.html

Shop a Lea this week at Ala Moana

Ala Moana’s annual Spring shopping event is back for 2010.  Shop a Lea is a week long shopping extravaganza, incorporating the shops at Ala Moana and exclusive in-store events and offers.  Special “shopping serenade” concerts, Runway shows at Centerstage and in-store happenings pepper the non-stop shopping.

If last year was any indication, the shopping deals should be insane.  This starts today and goes on until the 28th.

To get the full list of everything that’s going on, check out the Shop a Lea website.

    NEW! Kicks/HI Orange Label Backpack

The Kicks/HI Orange Label has been coming up with styles and designs that just epitomize “grown man status.”

And this Saturday’s release reinforces that theme fully.

This backpack combines high performance Cordura fabric with a leather bottom and grasp loop. Large, chunky zippers, stash pockets, a laptop sleeve and a spacious front compartment.  This is one back that works well with the schoolhouse, the workhouse, and the beach house.  This backpack comes in two dope styles: the smoothed out all-black everything edition and the attention grabbing black with white leather accents.  Both colorways feature the traditional Kicks/HI Orange Label tag and an orange stash pocket zipper.

This is definitely gonna go fast, so make sure you get on it now before it gets got by someone else.

You can scoop this up starting tomorrow at Kicks/HI Makaloa. For more info, check out http://www.kickshawaii.com

What? There’s Roller Derby in Hawaii?

Yessir.  Pacific Roller Derby has been rocking the all female short track version of roller derby for a couple of years now and they’ve seen steady growth in both the teams, fans, and participants in the sport.  Of course, the Drew Barrymore / Ellen Page movie “Whip It” also helped spur interest int he budding sport.

Now, the PRD is ready to send it’s best out to Arizona for The Dust Devil Tournament, a roller derby tournament featuring the Southwest’s best.

And the rollergirls need your support.

So, this Saturday at the Tennis Courts outside the Hideaway Bar at Barber’s Point, they’ll be holding a Red and Black Scrimmage.  This scrimmage will feature the best players in the state and will showcase the talent PRD will be sending to Arizona next month.  All proceeds from the admission and concession sales will help send the team on their trip.

The Scrimmage and Fundraiser will go down this Saturday in Barber’s Point. First whistle goes off at 4:30pm.  It’s $5 admission for the event and fans are encouraged to bring a beach chair or something to sit on for comfort.  This family friendly event is open to all ages.

St. Patrick’s Day Block Party in Chinatown

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, so you know there’s gonna be some drunken debauchery tonight at all the bar spots. The biggest spot of them all being Murphy’s on Merchant St.

The block party overtakes all of Merchant and even spills into the parking lot adjacent to the block.

If that gets too crazy for you, there’s also some block party action at Aloha Tower down the street. Either way, the party should still be going on after you get done with work.

Both block parties get going around 4pm, but knowing the Chinatown diehards, they’re probaby drinking right now.

808 Scene Zine Birthday Bash and Bailout

For those that know, atypicalLIVING co-contributor LOFA has been writing a column for 808 Scene Zine for more than a year.  You might have seen an article or two grace the pages within that time.

Well, this venerable zine is celebrating a milestone as the zine’s birthday is coming up.  To celebrate, they’ll be throwing a show/birthday party/fundraiser for the zine this Saturday night at Anna Banannas.  The zine does take a lot of money to produce and the show is being used to help give a personal bailout to the staff.

The show features music from Hawaii’s top emerging bands and the good vibes that only the Scene Zine can provide.

Doors pen at 9pm for the 18+ crowd. $5 for those 21+, $7 for those under, but they’re just suggestions.  Feel free to give more to the cause.  let’s help keep the Scene Zine get back into print by supporting the people that keep the scene going.
