    NEW! Kicks/HI “Nuff Respect” shirt

The Hawaiian Culture has numerous traditions.  One of the most sacred is the tradition of cultural taboos or “kapu” as they were known.  There were certain things you couldn’t do, such as NO looking at the king, stepping in his shadow, or being touched by his shadow, lest you be penalized with death, destruction and overall bad vibes toward your family.

This was the ultimate sign of respect, something that the Kicks/HI guys have in large supply: respect for the people, respect for the culture and respect for the land.  And they pay their respects to the roiginal culture through this shirt, which features the iconic Kapu sticks of the ancient Hawaiians.  The back of the shirt has “The natives are Restless” graphic with the “Established 2001” tag underneath.

This shirt is available in black, white, or wasabi green colorways and will be available at both the Ward and Makaloa shops, starting this Saturday at 11am.

For more info, check out Kicks Hawaii.

Ho’olako x Aloha New Era from Fitted

Another Saturday, another dope Fitted release.

The shirt release this week takes inspiration from German born artist and Hawaii resident Dietrich Varez. With no formal training, he has created amazing pieces that relate to Hawaiian folklore for years now. Most of his pieces focuses around the goddess Pele, which is the obvious inspiration for this grey shirt. The back of the shirt features the iconic Fitted crown.

Along with the shirt, there is also a new edition to the Aloha collection. This time, it’s the Summer classic New Era snapback. Green panels accented by a purple “Aloha” lined by green stroke, featuring a purple underbill and button. The back of the hat features a green and purple crown.

This one releases this Saturday morning.  Same rules as always: first come, first served; park at Ala Moana if you’re coming early.

For more info, check out the Fitted Hawaii site.

INERTIA 6: Come True this Saturday

HIp-Hop’s forward movement continues this Saturday afternoon with the return of INERTIA.

The seminal Hawaii hip-hop event by the lightsleepers brings together the formula that works for an all day jam: a B-Boy jam (crew & 1 on 1 battles), a blackbook battle and live painting.

The stakes are high, as the winner of the B-Boy battles will get free admission to the UNDIVIDED B-Boy battle May 29-30 and admission to two workshops of their choice.  The blackbook battle winners get Katch 1 books.

This is also LOFA’s birthday party, so IT’S A CELEBRATION SONNNN!

This all goes down this Saturday at Momilani Elementary from 11am-5pm. All proceeds from this event will go to GBC Youth Ministries.

For more, check out the lightsleepers.

I’ll be there, providing coverage for the event, so look for another atypicalLIVING covers… next week.

    Mos Def in Hawaii

_flyer_4x6_mosdef2Dante is back in Hawaii for the first time in a couple of years.  He’ll be returning with some new stuff, some of the classics, but still the same Mighty Mos that you know and love.  Oddly enough, the last time Mos was here was the last time there was an Inertia event thrown by the lightsleepers.

And guess what’s going on this Saturday?

Anyway, tickets for Mos Def can be had at the Pipeline box office or other fine ticket outlets.

The show is this Thursday and now that the kids are out of school, you might want to consider getting there early to find the nice parking.  Might want to consider getting there early anyway because both the Deadbeats and Creed Chameleon will be rocking the stage at Pipeline as well.

I could say more about it, but the DamItsGood guys ALWAYS holds down these dope promo videos for BAMP, so just check the video and get hyped for the show.

    NEW! Kicks/HI “Standard” logo tee

This Saturday marks the long awaited return of two personal favorites.

First up is the return of the Standard Kicks/HI logo shirt. This time, done up in two Summertime colorways: heather grey with white letters & grey slash (perfect for those Air Max you’ve been keeping on ice) and red with black letters & white slash (perfect for those Jordans & a shout out to Derrick Rose.)

Also coming out is the return of the Nike FC. A relic of the first run of SB kicks from Nike. I totally regret selling off my Barca FCs back a few years back.  Looks like I’ll be able to get them back, somewhat, with these new pieces.  Perfect to rock with shorts, these will keep it moving all Summer long. These also match perfectly with those “Conference Champs” shirts released last weekend.

All three of these will be available this weekend.  The shirts at both Ward and Makaloa; the kicks at Makaloa only.

For more info, check out Kicks/HI.
