May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii Nei.

The annual Spring Celebration in Hawaii, this day is a day where you hook up all your friends, family (and if you go to school, your teachers) with a lei to show your love and appreciation for them. Started in the 1920s by a local newspaper columnist and poet, the first May Day is Lei Day celebration was in 1927.

Since then, it has been a traditional custom every May 1st. SO, find a string of flowers, find someone you love or respect and hook them up. And PLEASE, no lame getting Lei’d jokes. Act like you HAVEN’T heard that before.

So, to ensure that you’re not lame and that you have an awesome May Day, here’s a video of Hawaii’s ambassadors of May Day, The Brothers Cazimero performing “My Sweet Pikake Lei” from the 25th anniversary of the Cazimero May Day Concert. Shouts out to Mountain Apple Company.
