    Trip The Lights Blackbook Battle

In addition to being the Greatest Night in Hawaii Hip-Hop History, the Grand Championship round of Trip The Lights: Beat Root will also feature the most epic blackbook battle in recent memory.

The word for this battle is “Primo.” SO, get to work and bring our completed pieces to Trip The Lights this Friday night for judging. The winner, from what I’ve heard, will be getting the dope prize pack from the fine folks at ArtPrimo, so you know the writers are gonna be gunnin for that prize pack.

Once again, the Greatest Night in Hawaii Hip-Hop goes down this Friday night at rRed Elephant. Doors open at 8PM and the full array of rRed Elephant’s cafe will be available. Also, I just so happen to walk by the place and I guess they now serve selected beers and wine as well, so something for everyone this Leap Year day.

The event is all ages and it’s $10 at the door. So, come early and rock out all night long.

For more, check out the lightsleepers website.

Special thanks to Prolifik, Skull Candy, Easy Music Center, ArtPrimo, in4mation, Vitamin Water and XPRMNT for support the Hawaii scene.

The night features performances by Lost At Sea, Jonah the Whale vs. Creed Chameleon and Hawaii Music Award nominees Hunger Pains. French Dunny coverage in the Advertiser

    flick: Cindy Ellen Russell/ Star-Bulletin/CRUSSELL@STARBULLETIN.COM

The French Dunny series release at Urbanz Toys garnered some mainstream media attention, as the Star-Bulletin sent out a team (writer Gary Chun, photographer Cindy Ellen Russell, and videographer Jason Gengabus) to cover the happenings for a features story.

Well, the story ran yesterday and it was very positive, equating the vinyl toy market to one of urban youth and art appreciation.  What was also pretty dope was the accompanying video with the article.  Very well done with interviews with buttrpecan1, Kathy and a shot of myself holding the very classy combination of White Wine and French Fries.

Check the Article here.  And view the video below.

    SideRoad Records vs. Siq Records

As a precursor to the greatest night in the history of Hawaii Hip-Hop, the Siq Records crew will unite with the SideRoad Records crew for an amazing event mixing the best of Hawaii and Canada.

The show will be co-headlined by Hawaii’s own Hunger Pains, the Bay’s finest- Joe Dub, and
    the pride of Saskatchewan- Factor.

Also on the bill is an amazing amount of the SideRoad and Siq family at one spot, including Creed Chameleon, Kirby Dominant, Meiso, Pure, Packo, Kay the Aquanaut, Forgetful Jones and Def3.  This is not your ordinary Thursday night jumpoff, this is a night full of amazing hip-hop spanning two countries.

The entire event goes down 9PM this Thursday night at the Lotus Soundbar on Kuhio Ave. This is a 21+ affair, so kids, stay home or wait until the next night at Trip the Lights when it’s all ages.

For more info, check out the Siq Records website.

Trip The Lights: Beat Root GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP

This is IT, you guys.  The final Beat Root (for now) goes down this Friday night, the 29th (leap year!) .  Four of the past winners (Opposite, Ques?, Lael’s Beats and Sentr1c) will be vying for the Grand Championship title with two of the most consistent competitors in the Beat Root series (S.T.U. and Humdrummin).  The title of Hawaii’s best beatmaker is on the line and thes guys will be giving it their all at rRed Elephant.

BUT!  That’s not the only thing going down this Friday night.  Oh no, because the lightsleepers have packed this night to the gills with an amazing array of performers.

Look for performances by Hawaii’s own and the Bay Area’s finest Joe Dub and the bulk of Canada’s hip hop scene with Factor, Kay the Aquanaut, Forgetfull Jones, Def3 and Kirby Dominant coming along side the ride.  Also performing are some of Hawaii’s illest, Rhyme Da Old Man will be throwing down, as well as Grip H and Juan P aka the Perfect Median and Showdown in Chinatown winners from the Hidden Habitats, Timer1 and DJ Bumblebee.

On top of ALL THAT, there’s also going to be art installations by The Starfish Guy, KOAK, Shaun Castro, Stanstill, Nicolai and a whole bunch more.

PLUS!  There’s also gonna be a blackbook battle based on the word “Primo,” sponosred by Art Primo.

I don’t know how they’ll be able to get everything in before 1am, but I’m hoping they do.  This is gonna be the greatest night in Hawaii Hip-Hop history.  No doubt in my mind.

Props to in4mation, XPRMNT, Prolifik, Skull Candy, Easy Music Center, Art Primo and Vitamin Water for making this all possible.

atypicalLIVING covers… French Dunny Release at Urbanz Toys

The French Dunny series got released with a bang this past week at Urbanz Toys in Kaimuki. Urbanz and Kid Robot provided Hawaii’s toy collecting massive with a special release/trading party featuring all things French: red and white wine, creme puffs, brie and fig tarts and… French Fries. Yes, French Fries. Nothing screams classy like French Fries.

Anyway, the release was pretty epic and Urbanz actually got a pretty good amount of stock in. And what a lucky bunch Urbanz got, as not one, but TWO golden tickets were found in the boxes. One was found by buttrpecan1 and the other found by Kathy herself. SO, to spread the karma, she hooked me up with a freebie box to go along with the traditional last two in the case that I normally do at these types of events. The freebie one turned out to be the green one in the toy pic, along side the white hunter dude (1/100) and the gray carbon neutral one, which, from a design standpoint, is pretty interesting.

Overall, it was a well done event by the Urbanz kids.  Seeing the collectors en masse was a great and the wine really helped out with some trades.  Seriously.

Awesome job and props to Kathy and Scott for throwing this together.  Now, if I can only petition Kid Robot to make the next Dunny series L.A. based so there can be some bandannas and 40s in brown bags at the next event.

    One can dream, right?

Check out the rest of the photos from the event in the atypical Flickr.

For more info on Hawaii’s toy scene, check out Urbanz Toys website and forum.

Fitted $10 Sale and Sunday Pa’ina

And you thought the BBQ pic from the Mets remix cap was a fake…

The whole Fitted Ohana will be throwing down a special party/sale to celebrate… well, celebrate doing it big. The dope part: everything on the floor is $10. First come, first served, first pick. You know how that goes.

The even doper part? The Fitted Crew will be throwing a barbecue in the parking lot. That’s right, you’re reading the flyer correct: free barbecue and free Vitamin Water.

It’s a Sunday afternoon barbecue and everyone is invited. Seriously.

The barbecue goes down at Fitted Hawaii on Kona Street, behind Ala Moana. The prices drop and food hits the grill promptly at 11am.  And the party doesn’t stop until 5pm.  The weather is looking hopeful, so things should be going off without a hitch.

Props to the whole Fitted crew, the aloha is definitely felt there.

For more on what’s in stock, check out the Fitted Hawaii site.
