Soulgasm feat. Special Guest DJ Cecil + residents Matt Kee, Yuji, & HughB this Friday at 39Hotel

    20130612-233653.jpg

For years now, Soulgasm has held the standard for dance filled parties in Hawaii. The monthly event, held every 3rd Friday, features house, soul, and funk and the good vibes of thirtyninehotel. Resident DJs Matt Kee, Yuji, and HughB hold down the spot every month and make sure that Chinatown keeps dancing.

For Soulgasm’s June event, they are kicking off the summer with special guest all the way from the Bay, Oakland’s own DJ Cecil of the legendary SF parties, thePeople and Bembe.

    Cecil bio -

Raised on old jazz and gospel records and fine-tuned by classical teachings on piano, DJ Cecil already held a deep understanding for music when he was led to hip hop in his tender teenage years. However, his arrival to the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 90‘s set the stage for his true unfolding; a path that would soon position him as an integral part of a burgeoning and beautiful underground house music & dance scene.

His passion for music is contagious; as he cleverly fuses house with the beautiful nuances of jazz, the heart of soul music and the boom-baps of hip hop. The result is a refreshing and colorful dance floor experience, that keeps the body at attention and the heart tenderly in tune.

DJ, musician & producer, DJ Cecil has a unique sound that delights listeners from all over the world – but perhaps his best personal accomplishments lie in the the monthly event he co-founded, “thePeople”. A signature of style, freedom and love that becomes unleashed on the dance floor, “thePeople” is now enjoying it’s fifth year as a monthly event that takes place in Oakland, California. Having hosted the likes of Rich Medina, DJ Spinna, Osunlade, Boddhisatva, Amp Fiddler & so much more, “thePeople” invigorates Bay Area nightlife with their unique offering of music, culture & art. Simply, it is a great reflection of a city full of immigrants, transplants, leftists, same-gender-loving, artists and people of color that Oakland is known to be. Expect soulful sounds from across a spectrum of genres; cutting edge bass driven broken rhythms folded into Afrobeat or Brazilian flavored tracks, and of course a little hip hop. Pulling from the influential rather than the derivative commercial end of the record crate, “thePeople” continues to be an important gathering space unlike no other.

This all goes down from 9pm-2am this Friday night at thirtyninehotel (39 N. Hotel St.) It’s a 21+ event & $10 gets you through the door. For more info, check out:

The slippers, based off the Hurley Phantom, uses neoprene lining on the straps and Nike Free technology on the sole for great cushioning, support, and flexibility. I have a pair of the general release version of the slippers and they are LEGIT with capital letters. Very comfortable and hella cushioned.

Buffalo Wild Wings Pearl Highlands Opening June 5th

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Had the pleasure of checking out the pre-opening VIP event of the new Buffalo Wild Wings at Pearl Highlands Center.

Situated next to the Regal Pearl Highlands 12 Theaters, the former Craft Supply of Honolulu has been transformed into a 70 table sports bar. 30 high tables front a 17 seat bar in the bar area. 40 tables make up the main dining area. So, tons of seating are available for patrons of this new establishment.

Did I mention the TVs? Well, there are numerous TVs throughout the venue, as per usual with the Buffalo Wild Wings set up of sports everywhere. Several projector screens are flanked by LCD screens of numerous shapes and sizes. The dining area had TV surrounding all diners in an almost sensory overload of sports. While me and @stutterinstan were enjoying our meal of Mango Habanero, Asian Zing, and Parmesan boneless wings, the amount of sports happening at once was overwhelming.

With NBATV, MLB Network, NHL Network, and various forms of ESPN tuned in, I don’t think anyone would be asking what the score of a particular game would be. The challenge is just finding it in the grid of sports happening on all the walls.

The meal was your standard bar fare, as you can’t really screw up wings. We did manage to have room for dessert, and, thanks to our server Megan’s suggestion, we had the Dessert Nachos. This concoction of a pastry shell, topped with four scoops of ice cream, honey, chocolate, and cheesecake bites was the perfect contrast to the hot wings we just had prior.

The environment is great and it’s a welcome change for something on the Westside. If you wanted to watch sports and have a bite to eat, you’re options were limited to The Shack, Chili’s, or trekking into town to one of the many sports bars there. Thankfully, for the Westside and Central residents, it’s a nice change of pace to go someplace close to enjoy sports.

Buffalo Wild Wings opens today, June 5th, and is open seven days a week.

Buffalo Wild Wings Pearl Highlands is located at 1000 Kamehameha Highway, next to Regal Theaters and above the Pearl City 24 Hour Fitness. For more info, check out http://www.buffalowildwings.com or follow them on Twitter (@BWWings) or like them on Facebook.
